Old B&W wedding photos make great cake toppers!
Acrylic is a hard, rigid, smooth and shiny plastic material.  I make photo cutouts out of 3/16" thick acrylic.  The sculpture part (where the photo is attached) is white and the base is made of 3/16" black acrylic.  The sculpture is chemically welded to the base which produces an extremely strong joint.  All edges are smoothed.  Acrylic cutouts not only look good, they feel good!
